Washington Post Confirms Federal Shutdown Didn’t Hurt Economy

But you have to read to the bottom of the article to find it.

The Washington Post reported on the economic numbers for November Friday, noting the positive growth in jobs and subsequent drop in unemployment. Buried beneath the good news for the economy however was a quote that directly contradicts many of the left-wing talking points the Post and other papers had pushed since this summer.

The first four paragraphs detailed the extent of what Ylan Q. Mui’s article called a continuation of “solid gains” and included an effusive quote from an analyst:

“This is just a clean sweep,” said Stuart Hoffman, chief economist for PNC Financial Services Group. “It’s a very good report. It’s across the board.”

But a few paragraphs later, that same analyst revealed something those critical of House Republicans for forcing the government shutdown might find newsworthy:

“The government shutdown was basically a nonevent,” Hoffman said.

Businesses hired at a rapid clip despite the federal government shutdown and partisan gridlock over the national debt limit. In November, job gains were spread across sectors ranging from construction and manufacturing to health care. With hopes high that lawmakers will reach a deal before new federal budget deadlines early next year, the runway could be clear for stronger economic growth in 2014.

That the shutdown was a “nonevent” would seem to contradict the multitude of articles run by the Washington Post over the past several months. Some might even say that news deserved to be a part of the frame for the story itself, as opposed to a line buried in the seventh paragraph of the article.
