University of Minnesota Trying To Ban 'Redskins' Name Ahead Of Upcoming Game

"The name of the Washington franchise is clearly an offensive racial slur"

The University of Minnesota's President is trying to ban the use of the Redskins' nickname for the team's upcoming game against the Minnesota Vikings on the Minnesota campus later this fall. With construction underway for a new stadium for the Vikings, the team will play its home games on the University of Minnesota's campus this fall, including one with the Redskins on Nov. 2.

That game, and the recent controversy surrounding the Redskins name, prompted University president Eric Kaler to write U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum (D-MN), noting the University would try and avoid use of the "offensive" nickname on any promotional materials for the game. Kaler's letter was  just the latest piece of support to the cause previously advocated by McCollum:

Kaler's letter was in response to a similar appeal from McCollum in a June letter to Vikings president Zygi Wilf, on which Kaler was copied. McCollum argued that the use of the nickname violates the university's Board of Regents’ policy on affirmative action, diversity and equal opportunity.
