After meeting with Vice President Joe Biden last week, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka told reporters Tuesday that he believed Biden would be a "good president" and that he still had "a lot of time" to enter the "wide open" competition. 

"The field is wide open. There's still a lot of time," said Trumka at a breakfast with reporters Tuesday.

Though Trumka said he didn't know if Biden would finally choose to jump in, saying he has "a lot on his shoulders" and "has to decide whether he's got the full focus," the union leader made clear that he had a very positive opinion of him.

"He would be a good candidate," said Trumka. "He would be a good president."  ​

Trumka's comments on Hillary Clinton were more reserved. Though he told reporters he thought she too would "make a great president" and could "cacth fire, too,"  he signaled the unions' discontent with her. Clinton must "really figure out how to energize workers," Trumka said with obvious undertones. 

Regarding presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Trumka had nothing but positive words. "I think he's connecting," said Trumka. "He has a very unique and genuine way of talking about the most pressing issues in politics and that's inequality in America."

AP reports that Trumka also said that while the 12.5 million-member labor federation could endorse a candidate as early as February, when Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary are held, it was "not likely."
