The co-founder of Twitter believes his company is at least partly responsible for the election of Donald Trump and he wants the world to know he is so very sorry about that.
Ev Williams told The New York Times, “It's a very bad thing, Twitter's role in that. If it's true that he wouldn't be president if it weren't for Twitter, then yeah, I'm sorry."
Trump is both loved and hated for his ample use of Twitter and once told Tucker Carlson, “I think that maybe I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for Twitter.” That’s because it gave him a direct line to the people and generated plenty of free press for his ideas.
This is the second time Williams has commented on Trump’s connection to Twitter. At a commencement address at the University of Nebraska, Williams told the graduates:
"What we tend to forget is that Zeus was so pissed at Prometheus that he chained him to a rock so eagles could peck out his guts for eternity. Some would say that's what we deserve for giving the power of tweets to Donald Trump."
If Hillary Clinton had used Twitter to leverage her way into the White House, Williams would be happy to take credit for the social medium's role in that. Democrats don't like it when free speech works against them.
