President Trump has announced that federal Judge Neil Gorsuch is his choice for the Supreme Court, according to Fox News.
Gorsuch, 49, serves on the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver. If confirmed -- and he is certainly about to face a perfect storm of opposition -- he will occupy the seat left by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia nearly a year ago. Trump has been floating Gorsuch’s name on a list of 21 potential choices circulating since during the presidential campaign.
If the Democrats, for whom dissent is now patriotic again, decide to filibuster, Gorsuch would need 60 votes in the 100-member Senate, in which case Trump would need to find at least eight Democrats to join Republicans in supporting his nominee.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., called earlier Tuesday for the nominee to be treated fairly: "What I would expect from our Democratic friends is the nominee be handled similarly to President Clinton's two nominees in his first term and President Obama's two nominees in his first term,” he said.
That's not going to happen. The Democrats will fight this tooth and nail. Gorsuch and everyone close to him are about to have their lives turned inside out as the left looks for anything with which to scuttle this nomination.
