In an incident reminiscent of the Bastille Day truck attack in Nice, France this year, a truck today plowed into a crowded Christmas market in Berlin, killing at least nine people and injuring more than 50.
Fox News reports that the truck slammed into the popular market at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church on Monday evening.
The suspected driver was arrested several hundred yards away from the scene and is being questions by police. A passenger in the truck reportedly has died.
While this has not been officially determined to be an act of terrorism yet (CNN is calling it a "truck crash"), Christmas markets are an easy targets for Islamic terrorists. ISIS even warned last week, after claiming responsibility for a deadly attack on Coptic Christians in Cairo which left 25 dead, that it would increase terrorist attacks against Christians in the coming weeks.
“Let all the disbelievers and apostates in Egypt and everywhere know that our war on polytheism is ongoing, and that the State of the Caliphate – with permission from Allah the Almighty – will continue to spill their blood and grill their bodies, so that there is no sedition and the religion is all for Allah,” said ISIS in a statement.
On November 26, a 12-year-old Iraqi boy born in Germany and apparently radicalized by ISIS attempted to blow up a device at the local Christmas market in Ludwigshafen, Germany. The device, covered with nails, failed to detonate and he tried again on December 5 but was reported by a bystander and the explosive was contained by police.
“It’s obvious that the threat will always remain,” Scott Stewart, vice president of tactical analysis for global intelligence firm Stratfor, told FoxNews.com earlier this month. “But with the holidays and many of the Christmas markets that are normally set up this time of year, it proves to be a tempting soft target.”
