A hashtag was trending on Twitter Friday that mocked (yet, nailed) the ridiculous ways the mainstream media spin the news to focus on the pet political agenda of the day. #MSNBCHeadlines allowed the Twitterverse to imagine headlines in reaction to the horrific Islamic terror attack on Bastille Day celebrations in France.
The results were grimly hilarious, if irreverent, and truly captured the mental gymnastics the MSM go through when writing actual headlines -- e.g., blaming the gun instead of the shooter, a "lone wolf" rather than Islamic ideology, etc.
Many of these are too close for comfort:
The next tweet is what started all of this. This is a real MSNBC headline -- NOT a fake:
That links to this story at NBC News:
Sadly, MSNBC wasn't the only ones missing the target in a huge way. The New York Times couldn't figure out what happened, either, issuing much of the same on its front page:
Later, NYT cartoonist Patrick Chappatte followed suit, also blaming the truck:
My, how far journalism has fallen when it's too difficult to distinguish satire from the real thing.
