Speaker of the House Paul Ryan announced on Thursday that he is not ready to support GOP presumptive nominee for president Donald Trump.
On CNN, Ryan said that Trump will need to unify the party before Ryan will give him support.
"To be perfectly candid with you, Jake, I'm just not ready to do that at this point. I'm not there right now," Ryan told CNN host Jake Tapper.
Ryan went on to say, "I hope to, and I want to. But I think what is required is to unify this party. And I think the bulk of the burden on unifying the party will have to come from our presumptive nominee."
But Ryan also said, "No Republican should ever consider supporting Hillary Clinton. Let me make that clear."
Donald Trump, not to be overshadowed, responded to Ryan's statements.
"I am not ready to support Speaker Ryan's agenda," he said. "Perhaps in the future we can work together and come to an agreement about what is best for the American people. They have been treated so badly for so long that it is about time for politicians to put them first!"
Ryan's Senate counterpart offered a weak endorsement of Trump on Wednesday saying he was "committed to supporting the nominee."
The Freedom Center is a 501c3 non-profit organization. Therefore we do not endorse political candidates either in primary or general elections. However, as defenders of America’s social contract, we insist that the rules laid down by both parties at the outset of campaigns be respected, and that the results be decided by free elections. We will oppose any attempt to rig the system and deny voters of either party their constitutional right to elect candidates of their choice.
