Al Sharpton discussed “the historical context” of Donald Trump’s victory with Harvard African-American studies scholar Henry Louis Gates on MSNBC’s Politics Nation and wanted to know how Trump’s presidency was going to affect black people in America. But Gates was far more concerned about something else: keeping Barack Obama’s legacy intact.

Both men said they were shocked by Trump’s election and it caused them great concern over what was going to happen next, especially in the black community since they fabricated the lie that Trump is out to destroy it.

“How will President Trump change the life of the average person of color in this country?” Sharpton asked.

It’s a question, if not the question that is always fodder for black progressive pundits like Sharpton. But Gates thought there was a bigger fish to fry and it concerned the objection of their immense affection:

“Well, I have no idea but I’m more concerned — Well, right now, the first thing I wanted to talk to you about was how he’s going to affect the legacy of the man you and I both love and admire: Barack Hussein Obama.”

“Absolutely,” Sharpton responded.

Gates then meandered back through history to the late 600 BC and the 25th dynasty in Egypt ruled by the Pharaoh Taharqa and likened him to Obama: 

“When he lost his throne, they chiseled his name off monuments in Egypt. And that’s the analogy I keep waking up and thinking Barack and Taharqa.”

So, there it is. The ultimate concern that President Trump will chisel Obama’s name from history and ruin the legacy he worked so hard to build. And remember where you heard it: MSNBC.
