Last Saturday about a thousand anti-capitalist, anti-Trump protesters gathered in Toronto’s Nathan Philips Square and made their way to the front of Trump Tower, chanting "Racist, sexist, anti-gay, Donald Trump is KKK," "One, two, three, four – Donald Trump go out the door," and "One solution – revolution."
The protest was organized and led by FightBack, the self-described “Marxist voice of the working class and revolutionary youth in today’s labour movement” -- hence the anti-capitalist hate for the new U.S. President-Elect, a billionaire real estate and reality show mogul.
In his piece about the event for CIJ News, Jonathan Halevi compiled a thorough list of signs being waved at the protest. In addition to the predictable "No hate!" slogans and witless humor ("Dump Trump!"), the signs include:
- Pro love, pro climate change, pro gender equality, anti Trump
- No country for ridiculous old man
- Fuck the United States
- You can’t comb over sexism and bigotry
- Trump is a sexual predator, a rascist, a misogynist, an embarrassment to the human race, no fit for President
- One solution REVOLUTION. Join the fight against capitalism today!
- Look at that face! Would anyone vote for him? Can you imagine that, the face of our next president Trump. FUCK NO!
- My Canada, green multicultural, equality for all. No Trump values here
- Make America safe again
- Stop racism, transphobia, misogyny, homophobia
- Trump, you are not a good example for kids
- Don’t normalize Trump
- Fight Trump, Fight capitalism
- Trump terrifies me more than 9/11 did
- Fight against state-sanctioned violence
- Trump is outdated. Inclusion for all!
“We have a fascist in the White House,” said Member of Provincial Parliament Cheri DiNovo (pictured above), the first speaker at the event. Presumably she meant Trump, who is not actually in the White House yet and is not a fascist, but facts are irrelevant to Marxist revolutionaries.
She dismissed the presidential elections in the US as undemocratic because, as Halevi notes, "the disenfranchised people like people of colour and blacks did not vote, and therefore the results don’t reflect the popular vote of the American people." She offered up "democratic socialism" as the only option that can defeat "fascism."
She urged Canadians and their political leaders to stand in solidarity with the victims of bigotry, including Muslims, the LGBT movement, and women. “We are all Muslim now!” she declared, willfully blind to the anti-gay, anti-woman, anti-infidel bigotry of Islam. Wake me when she decides to announce "We are all Jews now!"
“We must be the resistance… we’re going to win,” she concluded.
No, you're not. "Democratic" socialism never wins. It is a system inherently doomed to fail, Ms. DiNovo, just like your doctrine of multiculturalism and Islamophilia.
