On Sunday, College Football player Michael Sam came out as a "gay man" in an interview just shortly before the NFL draft. Since the revelation, debate has surrounded whether Michael Sam should be labeled a hero or anything other than a good football player.

TruthRevolt Editor-in-Chief Ben Shapiro appeared on the Jorge Ramos with Fusion TV to share his thoughts.

Shapiro: I am happy for Michael Sam because he's being who he wants to be and that's wonderful. I do think the media is overblowing it, because the media has a particular purpose here, and that is anytime the media senses a milestone, the milestone is directed against people that don't exist. Namely, this great, vast number of people that hate Michael Sam and hate gay people. I don't think America is a homophobic place. I don't think Michael Sam is going to have much difficulty in the NFL. In fact, I think the NFL is already celebrating him. I think the vast majority of the American people do what they're supposed to do...They shrug and they say, 'I hope he's a great football player.'

Ramos: Don't you think the NFL is a homophobic place? They don't even have one openly gay player.

Shapiro: How about this? How about we identify the actual, individual homophobes within the NFL and then we all condemn them as opposed to worrying about an institutional bias that nobody seems to be able to actually document.

Ramos: Do you think the NFL is ready for this?

Shapiro: I think the NFL is absolutely ready for this. Clearly, Missouri was and Missouri isn't exactly the main stay College of liberal arts. Missouri is a very red area of the United States, and his teammates on the campus obviously didn't think it was a big deal, and I think it'll be fine for him in the NFL. That's why I like what Michael Sam said, 'I don't think this is a big deal,' and I agree with him. I don't understand why the media makes it a big deal, and I'm wondering, after he comes out and after he's accepted, is the media going to move on to the first gay jockey or the first gay hockey player. The goal of the media in all of this is to create this bug-a-boo of the American populace as vastly homophobic, as hating gay people, and therefore it is a massive challenge for any gay American in public life to come out. That's simply not true in America 2014. When the media portrays it as a great act of heroism for anybody to come out. Look, I'm an Orthodox Jew, I wear my yarmulke here on television. That doesn't make me a hero. I don't think America is an anti-Semitic country, I don't think it's an anti-gay country.

Later, Ramos asked Shapiro if there was a lot of discrimination in the country against gays. Shapiro responded:

Shapiro: I would say there is a vastly minute amount of discrimination against gays in this country. The FBI statistics show there are about the same number of attacks on Jews in this country as there are homosexuals [per capita]. This is not a country that discriminates against Jews and homosexuals. When we do find somebody who discriminates against homosexuals, they should be called out by every person of good-hearted intent as they are in the United States 2014. This is not 1952....
