Comedian Seth Meyers spoke with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) on NBC's Late Night with Seth Meyers about the senator's recent "the world is on fire" comments and how he believes that is true, as long as the subject is global warming.
In a clip posted to the show's YouTube page, the two lightly banter back and forth before Meyers plays a clip of a speech given by Cruz in which he grabs the attention of a young child sitting with her mother.
Cruz "scared" the young girl after telling those gathered, "And the Obama/Clinton foreign policy of leading from behind -- the whole world's on fire!"
Without missing a beat, the little girl responded curiously, "The whole world's on fire?"
Cruz laughed with those in attendance and said, "Yes, the world is on fire. Your world is on fire."
Meyers joked that the important lesson to learn is that "kids are terrible with metaphors" and perhaps a political speech isn't the most fun place to take a child.
But Cruz said the clip was missing a very important comment he made to assure the little girl:
But you know what? Your mommy's here, and everyone's here to make sure that the world you grow up in is even better.
The media had a field day with the edited sound bite and Cruz said by the end of it, he was basically turned into Freddie Krueger. Yet he said he had spoken to the girl's mother and the little girl thinks he's a "fireman" and is not scared at all.
When Meyers heard what Cruz said he responded, "First I got excited because I thought maybe you were coming around on global warming, but that's not the case, right?" He added, "Because I think the world's on fire -- literally -- hottest year on record."
Cruz said debates on this subject should "follow science and data." He purported that science does not back up climate "alarmists."
Meyers didn't take Cruz's comments too seriously, as he ended the segment with jokes.
