On Monday's Morning Joe on MSNBC, host Joe Scarborough wondered sarcastically if any of the networks who ran non-stop coverage of the Bridgegate scandal would now run "nonstop breathless coverage," about Christie being cleared. Tacitly referring to his own network, he said, "I actually turned on TV because I was expecting to actually see people that had been talking about it for eight months straight, to say 'Okay, guess what? Nothing came of it.'"
When "Bridgegate" broke, MSNBC drew criticism for its non-stop coverage of the scandal. Even leftist comedian Bill Maher felt the coverage was way over the top.
In referring to Christie being cleared by the state legislature, Joe Scarborough bashed his own network without mentioning it by name:
Scarborough: Hey, huge news today by the way. Friday. Came out Friday. And I’m looking forward to us leading news with it. I'm sure all the networks are going to be running it for weeks to come. Chris Christie cleared by the New Jersey state legislature. And I’m looking forward -- I actually turned on TV because I was expecting to actually see people that had been talking about it for eight months straight, to say "Okay, guess what? Nothing came of it." They actually found news they could make up-- and then put a breaking news head, Chris Christie may be responsibility for a future meteor shower or something, it was --
Brzezinski: Okay, just let it play out.
Scarborough: But it's played out. I mean, John Heilemann, where does Chris Christie go to get his reputation back? I know he’s working on his waistline but where does he go to get his reputation back?
Heilemann: I think Chris Christie’s doing just great.
Scarborough: Should there be like eight weeks of news coverage now?
Heilemann: Luckily I’m not the news director for any of the institutions --
Brzezinski: Thank God you're not.
Scarborough: What do you think which one I’m referring to?
Heilemann: You must be referring to all of them. I'm not the news director---
Scarborough: What network do you think I’m referring to?
Heilemann: You made a blanket comment. I'm a news director at none of those places.
Scarborough: I made a blanket comment (inaudible) that I was speaking about one specific network. I don't know why you would say that. It makes me sad you think I would be talking about one network.
Heilemann: A lot of coverage on a lot of networks. There was blanket coverage of this topic.
Scarborough: I'm looking forward to the eight weeks of nonstop breathless coverage.
