With just barely enough time to recover from the wounds he sustained in August subduing a radical Islamist carrying out a terrorist attack on a train bound for Paris, U.S. soldier Spencer Stone was stabbed several times in the torso during an altercation in Sacramento early Thursday morning. He is now recovering in the hospital.

There's not many details at this point, but the Air Force Times is reporting that Airman 1st Class Stone was on a street corner in the California capital and suffered multiple stab wounds to his upper body in what news reports are naming as some sort of fight. Stone was with a group of friends at the time of the incident.

At this time, no description has been released of Stone's assailant other than he is a man in his 20s.

Initially, police were treating the scene as a homicide, as it appeared to them that Stone was fatally injured. However, the Air Force has confirmed that his injuries are not life threatening.

In late August, Stone and two other American friends, one of them also military, were on a train bound for Paris when an Islamic terrorist attack began. As the men heard gun fire, they rushed in and subdued the gunman. Stone was the first to reach the terrorist and applied a chokehold, ending the murderous plot. Stone was also injured during the takedown, receiving multiple slash wounds to the head, neck, and hand from a box cutter. His thumb was nearly severed.

Stone received a Purple Heart for his bravery from the Pentagon and France made he and his Army friend, Alek Skarlatos, Knights of the Legion of Honour. It is interesting to point out that Skarlatos, an Oregon native, was supposed to be in Snyder Hall of Umpqua Community College in Roseburg the very day the school was attacked by a gunman. He wasn't there because of a scheduled appearance with Ellen DeGeneres.

UPDATE: A senior Pentagon official has told Fox News that this incident is not related to a terrorist act. It occurred near a bar and alcohol is said to be a factor. So far, investigators believe that Stone left a bar with a woman who was being harassed. When Stone came to her aid, he was overcome by a group of men, held to the ground, and stabbed.

Sacramento Deputy Chief Ken Bernard reiterated that this incident had nothing to do with the France train attack. He would not comment on the above details, saying its an active investigation.

The suspects are described as two Asian males. They fled in a 2009-2012 dark color Toyota Camry, Bernard said.

Stone suffered "significant injuries" but is in stable condition.
