Politico's Dylan Byers cites three errors in Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin's column on the tea party in an article Monday. Byers notes how Rubin got the name of one candidate wrong and incorrectly characterized New Jersey Senator Corey Booker as a Representative. But Byers said Rubin's biggest error was the piece's underlying premise:
Rubin's theory is that Sens. Cruz and Paul aren't endorsing certain tea party figures because "they know when to separate themselves from the cranks and the losers on the right." Her primary evidence for this is that "neither one has endorsed Matt Bevin in Kentucky, Milton Wolf in Kansas or Chris McDaniel in Mississippi." She does not mention that Bevin, Wolf and McDaniel are all running against incumbent senators, and that it is extremely rare for a senator to endorse against another sitting senator in a primary.
