In an appearance over the weekend on MSNBC’s AM Joy with Joy Reid, former daytime talker Phil Donahue reminded everyone that he is still very liberal.
When asked to comment on the current state of politics, Donahue said we’ve entered “the darkest political moment in American history” when Donald Trump was elected.
“Who’s going to argue that?” he asked.
As The Hill notes, The Phil Donahue Show ran for 29 years and Trump was often a guest. Donahue remembered:
“I thought he was a hot dog. He collected celebrities and made a lot of noise and got his name on a lot of buildings.”
On Trump’s impeachment, Donahue said it wouldn’t be possible because the president is too popular and his supporters “will not tolerate criticisms” of Trump. He compared them with Elvis Presley fans. He also repeated Trump’s own claim that he could shoot a gun down Fifth Avenue and no one would care to prove his point. Donahue said anyone voting for Trump's impeachment in Congress would be doing so at their own peril: “He could risk his own reelection.”
Previously, Donahue described Trump supporters as this: "They’re all white—almost exclusively… they're scared, and they're very angry.”
But the Donahue zinger of the day was this: “All of a sudden we got a crotch-grabber for a president.”
Some things never change. According to the above picture's caption, that's Rush Limbaugh in the background during an appearance on an old Donahue program. Phil's face says it all, doesn't it?
