A Christian youth ministry near Auburn, AL is reeling from embarrassment after putting up a billboard showing five smiling kids arm in arm alongside a quote of Adolf Hitler. It went up Friday outside of a mall and by Tuesday, it was taken down.
The quote used on the billboard, "He alone who owns the youth, gains the future," originates from the 1930s and is attributed to Hitler's youth movement speeches. Unfortunately, a quote by an evil tyrant responsible for the deaths of six million Jews never goes over well, despite the truthfulness of the statement.
Life Savers Ministries founder James Anderegg admitted to a local paper the poor judgment used in the decision to using the quote in the first place. "Herbert Hoover would have been a far better one to quote when he said, 'Children are our most valuable resource," Anderegg said in hindsight. "We are a children's organization and had honorable intentions and nothing less."
Anderegg assured that they were not trying to "cause confusion," but undoubtedly most readers were unable to get past the "Adolf Hitler" in bold-red ink to even notice the Bible verse from Proverbs underneath.
Truth is, Life Savers probably didn't do much PR damage: public displays of religion are generally up there in popularity with Hitler these days, anyhow.
