Tom Brokaw could do nothing else but resort to jokes Tuesday night during his reporting of the all-out assault on Democrats. And the Today show could do nothing else but run a story about it Wednesday morning, praising the veteran news anchor for his segue abilities the prior evening.

Sitting among other unhappy campers Rachel Maddow and a pouty Chris Matthews, Brokaw's discussion of Sen. Mitch McConnell's re-election was interrupted by the obnoxious four-alarm-fire-style ringtone emanating from his cell phone. He removed it from his pocket to silence the alert, but not before he faked a phone call promising to bring home milk and feed the dog.
