Not Again: Woman Shot In Head Walking in Hollywood

"No strong leads," police say.

It's been four days since 30-year-old aspiring actress Carrie Jean Melvin was shot in the back of the head at point blank range by a black man wielding a shotgun as she walked in Hollywood with her boyfriend Sunday night. Other than the suspect's race and clothing description (hooded sweatshirt), police say they have "no strong leads" and are baffled by the "unusual crime."

On Sunday evening, Melvin and her unidentified boyfriend were searching for a place to eat around 10 p.m. while walking near the famous Sunset Boulevard when a black man, believed to be in his mid-20s, walked up behind the woman and pulled the trigger on his shotgun aimed at the back of her head. He then got into a dark sedan and sped off. He appeared to be alone. The boyfriend was unharmed.

Detective John Swaggs of the Los Angeles Police Department said, "This is a very unusual crime. We have no strong leads to go on."

"There was no conversation before, during or after the shooting," Swaggs continued. "Neither of their lives dictated that something like this could or would happen. They weren’t battling an estranged boyfriend or girlfriend or an ex-lover. That’s not a gang-ridden neighborhood or a neighborhood claimed by gangs."

Melvin lived in an apartment a block away.

LA police are asking for help. Their tip line is 212-382-9470 or online at LAPDonline.org.

This apparently random murder is eerily similar to another shooting around the 4th of July weekend in San Francisco when Katie Steinle was shot and killed by a five-time deportee illegal immigrant while she walked along a pier with her father and a friend.
