The president’s most recent unconstitutional, unilateral alteration of the Intolerable Care Act isn’t fooling anyone. Friday, Yahoo News called the president’s desperate Obamacare “fix” exactly what we all know it to be: “strictly political.”

At best, President Obama's proposed health care “fix” offers political protection for vulnerable lawmakers. That's because beyond giving insurance companies permission to continue offering individual health care plans that don't comply with the Affordable Care Act, the president's fix doesn't compel anyone to do anything.

Not only does the “fix” lack any legal teeth, it’s likely to make matters worse for both insurers and insurees economically. McClatchy DC quotes Karen Ignagni, president and CEO of America’s Health Insurance Plans, who argues:

Changing the rules after health plans have already met the requirements of the law could destabilize the market and result in higher premiums for consumers.

Kaiser Family Foundation VP Larry Levitt agrees, arguing that the best move to keep premiums down is just rip off the band-aid.

From the perspective of keeping the market stable and premiums down, a quicker transition to new coverage is the best approach. Any plan that allows individuals to keep their old policies will tend to raise costs and raise premiums.

So why is the president rewriting the law once again? Politics, as usual. But what is unusual is the unanimity of Americans' reactions to the president’s self-serving political ploy. No one's buying what the ShamWow salesman's peddling anymore.
