The cities of New York and Philadelphia have been plastered with signs calling for an end to catcalling and the street harassment of women.
Thanks to the efforts of Feminist Apparel and the feminist group known as Pussy Division, "No Catcall Zone" and "No Catcalling Any Time" signs are sprouting up (illegally) underneath "Loading Only" and "No Parking" signs around the cities. Pictures of the signs are being shared on social media and on both group's websites:
Feminist Apparel is a non-profit organization providing t-shirts and assortments so that "Anyone Can Feminist" -- even kids, with shirts that state, "Pizza Rolls, Not Gender Roles." The group touts itself as inclusive of everyone -- "men, women, and people" -- and to prove it, they offer shirt sizes from XS-5XL! Sales from those shirts helped fund the street sign campaign.
Joining Feminist Apparel in the stunt was Philadelphia-based feminist organization Pussy Division, who promotes itself as guerrilla activists committed to fighting "oppression and inequality."
City workers have been busy removing the non-permitted signs, posted during International Anti-Street Harassment Week, which could confuse citizens as they appear to look like officially sanctioned street signs, reports New York Daily News.
Some reactions to the signs do not indicate solidarity with the feminist plight: "Great idea! Let's put up NO BITCHING signs at work, too." Or, "Meanwhile, in Saudi Arabia where women have real problems…"
Back in October, a woman walked the streets of New York City for 10 hours and recorded the "harassing" comments she received. These signs are an obvious hat tip to that encounter (below).
Princess Leia was not so lucky either:
