NFL running back Ray Rice was suspended for the first two games of the upcoming season over an incident in which he was arrested for domestic violence, the league announced Thursday.

Rice was arrested in February after an altercation in an Atlantic City elevator that left Rice's fiancee unconscious.

TMZ released some surveillance footage from the elevator, which has partly fueled criticism of Rice's suspension as too lenient, especially in comparison to some of the suspensions of other NFL players, including a wide receiver who was suspended for the entire 16-game-season over a failed drug test.

The website Deadspin suggested that additional evidence exists which would make Rice's act, and the relative lenience he received as a result, all the more egregious:

There is surveillance video, reportedly in the police's possession, that shows the blow that knocked Palmer out. One day that video will be leaked, and we'll all see Ray Rice deck a woman, and we'll remember that the NFL suspended him for two games.
