MSNBC Panel Blames Obama's Shortcomings on Vicious Republicans

Obama underestimated the 'viciousness of Republicans.'

MSNBC's Chris Hayes debated New York Magazine's triumphant declaration that President Obama had accomplished the "four big things" he's promised to do.

Johnathan Chait wrote in his "Mission Accomplished" article, "What’s no longer possible is to imagine that historians will look back at Obama’s presidency and conclude not much got done."

Hayes took the premise of Chait's article and used Obama's embarrassingly narcissist nomination victory speech in 2008 as a launching pad for the Obama love-fest:

I am absolutely certain that generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when we began to provide care for the sick and good jobs to the jobless; this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal; this was the moment when we ended a war and secured our nation...

Interestingly, Hayes ended the clip there, in mid-sentence. If he had allowed the clip to continue, his viewers would have heard Obama further proclaim that this was the moment we "restored our image as the last, best hope on Earth." An idea that can be seriously debated given the President's feckless efforts on the international stage.

Nevertheless, the panel continued to discuss Obama's performance over the past five and a half years. Each time a panelist raised any criticism or suggested he had not actually accomplished what he set out to do, Hayes played defense. On the question of education or the economy, Hayes proclaimed that the 2008 election was really only about ending the Iraq War and health care and since he "accomplished" those goals, he was a success.

Panelist Tara Dowdell wrote off any suggestion that Barack Obama was not 100% successful to Obama underestimating the "viciousness of Republicans."
