In the last few weeks, MSNBC has trotted out several personalities in the space formerly occupied by disgraced misogynist Martin Bashir. Ari Melber seems to be getting the longest audition of the bunch, hosting again this week. But Melber’s lack of experience or familiarity with Washington may have shown through Monday, when Melber was astounded by Rep. Paul Ryan’s (R-WI) admission that House Republicans still wanted to defund Obamacare.

Ryan was quoted over the weekend as saying that one of the reasons he pushed for a budget deal was to return attention to the debate over the President’s health care overhaul. In a discussion with Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank and MSNBC weekend host Karen Finney, Melber was nearly apoplectic over Ryan’s candor:

Am I being too old fashioned to say that it is inappropriate for Paul Ryan, the leader of the budget committee, to say that one of his reasons to fund the federal government which is part of his obligation, one of his reasons to do that was a political strategy that he could pivot back to attacking the ACA. Isn’t that inappropriate?

Neither the left-leaning Milbank nor Finney shared Melber’s concern, with both readily conceding the reality Ryan spoke about. Milbank even noted that, upon leaving the budget caucus, Republican House members all wanted to speak about Obamacare, which new polls indicate is increasingly unpopular, not the budget.
