On Sunday night, Miley Cyrus flashed her bare nipple to the camera before appearing on stage for a live performance at MTV Video Music Awards.
As the camera panned backstage, Cyrus failed to cover up and the broadcast quickly cut away to the crowd while she continued to talk. She then said, "What's happening? Oh, sorry."
A representative from MTV said the shot would be removed from further broadcasts of the show.
The Parents Television Council accused MTV of trying to create controversy.
"It's become their stock and trade — how can we outrage parents today? Let's play up the youth rebellion angle and do things that kids are going to love and parents are going to get outraged by," said Melissa Henson, the PTC's director of grassroots education and advocacy.
Cyrus was also smoking a joint and offering to share it with photographers. Reports ABC News, "After the show, Cyrus came backstage to pose for photographs in a bubble gum pink ensemble. She arrived with a lit joint, and passed it around to photographers."
"I've been doing this (expletive) for a while. Because you're all my friends, and my song is kinda, sorta about the love of marijuana and the love of humankind, I brought a little joint if anyone would like any. Anyone?"
