Chris Matthews took issue with recent comments made by former Bush administration Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld about President Obama's inaction after Afghanistan's leadership decided to support Vladimir Putin over the United States. Rumsfeld had said "a trained ape" could get an agreement.
Matthews and guests David Corn and Eugene Robinson mocked Rumsfeld for "phoning in" his interview with Fox News host Greta Van Susteren. After playing a clip of Mitt Romney ciriticizing Obama's reaction to what Putin is doing in Ukraine, Matthews shouted,
Just shut up!
Then, after introducing his guests, Matthews continued:
My word is shame, there's no shame! First of all Romney doesn't know anything about foreign policy... Rumsfeld should shut up! Rumsfeld took us into a war. He led us into the war, misled us!
Matthew waxed eloquent about the "charade" Rumsfeld used to fool the American people to go into war in Iraq:
... and he comes out with his bedroom slippers on and makes a phone call to Greta Van Susteren! I'm sorry he doesn't even show up in person. He's calling from a bedroom somewhere or a home. I don't know where he's calling from! Why don't they just go away!? They blew it! Rumsfeld!
