Marvel’s New ‘Occupy Avengers’ Introduces a Hero for the 99%

Earth’s mightiest social justice warriors.

Marvel is adding a new kind of superhero to its lineup. Forget everything you know about The Avengers, Earth’s mightiest heroes, and make way for Earth’s mightiest social justice warriors.

On the heels of Captain America: Civil War, the movie where good guys fought good guys in an epic battle over the abuses of unchecked power, comes a new kind of hero: the anti-hero. That is, a Democrat with bow and arrows seeking a path to justice that is different than the “privileged class” of superheroes who can do whatever they want with no consequences. Enter Occupy Avengers, the new series from Marvel NOW!

Dropping on November 2nd, issue number one promises to “take back justice” with protagonist Clint Barton, also known as Hawkeye, who “wants to create a working-class, blue-collar team of Avengers to deal with more everyday injustices,” as The Mary Sue website states.

Since the Civil War movie and comics, Hawkeye has reached peak frustration with how his team has been handling things, and so he is embarking on his own to bring about social change. The series is being written by David Walker, author of the canceled Nighthawk comic. In a Comic Con video interview, Walker, sporting support for Black Lives Matter, described the concept behind the new direction.

“When you read most superhero books, the stakes are really high and The Avengers, or Spiderman, or the X-Men, they always seem to be fighting these galactic threats,” Walker said. “[Occupy Avengers] is about a team of superheroes who are for everyday people.”

“These are the superheroes that serve the interests of the other ninety-nine percent,” Walker added. He described the new team, which will include Native American character, Red Wolf, as “working-class superheroes.”

In anticipation of the release, Marvel has released a sneak-peak inside its first edition and a description which is sure to make you never want to read a single issue:

Super heroes – they’re a privileged class. Doing what they want, when they want and suffering none of the consequences. They have no regard for the ordinary people who are left behind to suffer in their wake. Something has to change. Today, Marvel is pleased to present your first look at OCCUPY AVENGERS #1 – the brand-new series launching this November from critically acclaimed creators David F. Walker (Power Man and Iron Fist, Nighthawk) and Carlos Pacheco (Captain America, Uncanny Inhumans)! The question remains – who will stand up for the little guy? There is a man. If you can find him, and if he believes in your cause – he and his friends will put things right. Some call them outlaws, rebels, vigilantes. To others, they’re heroes, through and through.

No powers to speak of – just skills, smarts and a burning desire to do what’s right. His name is Clint Barton, Hawkeye. And it’s time to take back justice! Don’t miss the thrilling debut of Hawkeye’s new team of heroes on November 2nd when OCCUPY AVENGER #1 comes to comic shops and digital devices everywhere!
