In a segment titled "Gaywatch", Jon Stewart of The Daily Show showed off his moral supremacy by directing his comedic cannon at an elderly couple in Great Britain whose privately owned bed and breakfast recently suffered litigation defeat for refusing to allow gay couples to share beds - even though their policy extended to unmarried heterosexual couples as well.
After a few brief quips about "English Breakfasts" and "Subaru", Jon Stewart cuts to a clip of the two gay male plaintiffs, denouncing their treatment:
We just wanted a relaxing weekend away, something thousands of other couples do in Britain every weekend. Because we wanted to bring our new dog, we checked that he would be welcome, it didn't even cross our minds in Britain, 2008, we needed to ask if we would be.
The clip cut, and Jon Stewart went into bashing the Bible:
Of course the dog is welcome, The Bible doesn't say anything about dogs going to hell...What kind of evil monsters would turn away this adorable pair of matching Simon Pegs?
A clip of the elderly bed and breakfast owners giving their testimony then relayed:
We appeal to the Supreme Court to introduce more balance when dealing with competing rights of sexual orientation and religious liberty...We're just ordinary Christians who believe in the importance of marriage as the union of one man and one woman.
The clip cut, and Jon Stewart offered his self-righteous rebuttal:
That is respectfully, a load of sh*t! What kind of sh*t I don't know, steer sh*t, cow sh*t, bull sh*t! That is literally bull sh*t! First of all, if you're "good" Christians, you wouldn't charge weary travelers to stay in your home in the first place. You know where I learned that? A little best seller called The Bib-ile.
Stewart then pulls out a bible and mockingly reads various passages out of context, primarily Romans 15:7 and 1 Peter 4:9 -- "welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you" and "offer hospitality to one another without grumbling."
Of course, the couple described themselves only as "ordinary" Christians following their principles to the best of their ability, not morally superior "good" Christians -- and the Bible does not oppose the concept of private property.
Jon Stewart might want to point that high-powered perception back at himself, because if he were truly the "good" socialist-liberal he claims to be, his net-worth of $80-million would be up for grabs in the local Salvation-Army bin at his nearby homeless shelter - that is if he could see it from his luxurious penthouse.
Jon Stewart then went after the New York Catholic Cardinal Dolan and his recent interview with David Gregory of NBC on why his church is failing in the gay-marriage debate. In the interview, Cardinal Dolan stated they were "out-marketed" by opposition forces. Jon Stewart had this to say in response:
What? The Catholic Church out-marketed? You are the outfit that convinced a billion people to give up masturbation and pay ten percent of their income for the privilege. How does an organization like that get out-marketed?
Stewart then played more clips from the interview where Cardinal Dolan made some fairly honest points about the church's struggle:
When you have forces like Hollywood, when you have forces like politicians, when you have forces like some opinion molders that are behind it, it's a tough battle.
The clip cut, and Stewart mocked Cardinal Dolan's point by making some rather smug assertions:
Sure, it's a tough battle when all you have on your side is...GOD! Don't know if it ever occurred to you, maybe this situation is not about marketing, maybe the Catholic Church is in a morally inferior position.
