Jon Stewart Mocks...Reality?

"Murder, So Rote"

In his Monday night mockery of conservative reaction to the recent killing spree in Santa Barbara, Jon Stewart of Comedy Central's The Daily Show displayed his dislike for what can only be called reality, as he mocked the very real (conservative) notion that mass killings have eternally existed in some form or another and will continue to exist.

In a segment titled, "Murder, So Rote," Stewart begrudgingly lamented about how past mass killings were met with good intentions on behalf of the public to "solve" the problem by regulating the right to bear arms, but now, to Stewart's dismay, Americans just aren't interested in "solving" the problem, just accepting it.

In his crusade to make his moral case, Stewart played several clips of Fox News commentators going through the usual refutations of gun control measures: People will use knives instead of guns, people will be defenseless, and people will always kill people. Nowhere in any of those clips did a single Fox commentators state they "accept" mass killings, but that didn't stop Stewart from putting words in their mouth.

When Stewart rolled a clip of Bill O'Reilly saying "no matter what society does, there will always be mass murder," Stewart made no attempts to acknowledge the very logical foundations O'Reilly based his statement on, choosing to instead stare at the camera like a deer in headlights as if something "extreme" had fallen upon his deaf ears. If Stewart had chosen to open a history book in that moment, he'd see the very real and documented fact that human beings have been killing each other since time began, and unless Stewart is advocating a police state where Americans are subjected to around-the-clock surveillance, he should be prepared to accept that reality.

In the segment's closing, Daily Show contributor Jessica Williams stated, "every other developed country has somehow stopped [mass killings] from happening." What country exactly was she referring to? Norway? If that's so, then why in 2011 did Anders Behring Breivik kill 77 people if "every other developed country has somehow stopped this from happening?"

Stewart, so rote!
