On Thursday, Jon Stewart of Comedy Central's The Daily Show attempted to paint conservatives, and for that matter Fox News, as having a "love affair" with Russian President Vladimir Putin by playing several news clips out of context accompanied by his snarky commentary.
In a segment titled "Big Vladdy," satirically referencing the Adam Sandler comedy Big Daddy, Stewart began with a quote from German Prime Minister Angela Merkel calling President Vladimir Putin "delusional" and "out of touch" with reality, then used it as his stepping stone to smear conservatives. Stewart stated:
And that brings us to the second portion of our headline. Much of the world now sees Putin for what he is -- a semi delusional autocrat, who views the dissolution of the Soviet Union as one of the great tragedies of the late twentieth century and has confused his owns geo political propaganda for reality. Who would be fooled by this guy's bullsh*t?
Stewart then relayed several deceptively edited sound bites of Fox News commentators to frame it as if they were praising Putin. However, the pundit's Stewart attacked (O'Reilly, Giuliani) did no such thing. Without the editing and Stewart's commentary, it's clear they were talking about Putin's effectiveness as a leader on the international stage, saying he knows what he wants and is smart to take advantage of the west's weakness, while highlighting that President Obama's "peace without victory" foreign policy pales in comparison to Putin's aggressive tactics.
The clips finished and Stewart continued his assault as follows:
Honestly, I got to tell you, the weirdest thing about this isn't Putin invading Ukraine -- you expect a crazy guy to act crazy. The weirdest thing is seeing conservatives in our country point at the crazy guy and go, "Yeah, I'll have what they're having."
Stewart again relayed several more deceptively edited Fox News sound bites to paint conservatives as in love with Putin because he "wrestles tigers" and "rides horses with his shirt off," when, in fact, they were actually talking about how the world perceives Putin as a man who "wrestles tigers" and "rides horses with his shirt off," while viewing President Obama as a weakling in "mom jeans." Stewart responded:
Here's the thing you got to remember. Putin doesn't actually wrestle bears and tigers. That's propaganda. He did once shoot a tiger, but only after that tiger had been pre-tranquilized and trapped in a snare for him. For god's sakes, how in one 24 news do you guys upgrade Putin from wrestling bears to tigers anyhow? By tomorrow, it will be he smacked the teeth out of the great white shark and made him blow him while Obama sat there wistfully wearing capri pants and a baby bonnett. You have to admit there is something ridiculous about a middle-aged world leader riding around shirtless on a horse like Conan the Barbarian after a dozen donuts...That is an image that looks like it should be air brushed on to the side of a van in a New Jersey rest area.
Stewart then attempted to paint conservatives as hypocrites by playing several sound bites of Fox News commentators calling President Obama a "tyrant" and a "dictator" for his executive orders with Obamacare and his threats override Congress and the Constitution. Stewart failed to highlight that conservatives were calling Obama a dictator with his domestic policies, while calling him weak and indecisive with his foreign policies.
