In an interview on HuffPost Live, former president Jimmy Carter said he believes Jesus would support gay marriage, adding, "I think Jesus would encourage any sort of love affair if it was honest and sincere, and was not damaging to anyone else."
The comment came when liberal host Marc Lamont Hill asked Carter if he thought Jesus would condone gay marriage. Carter replied by giving what he emphasized was his "personal belief" and not based in scripture:
HILL: Would Jesus approve gay marriage?
CARTER: I believe he would. I believe Jesus would. I don’t have any verse in scripture…
HILL: No no no, just intuitively, yeah.
CARTER: I believe that Jesus would approve gay marriage, but I’m not– that’s just my own personal belief. I think Jesus would encourage any sort of love affair if it was honest and sincere, and was not damaging to anyone else. And I don’t see that gay marriage damages anyone else.
Carter also briefly addressed his view on abortion, explaining that he was against it because he did not think Jesus would approve of it.
