Over the weekend, social justice organizer and self-described "cultural producer" dream hampton -- that's right, just like poet e.e. cummings, she doesn't capitalize her name -- tweeted revelations about megastar rapper Jay-Z's "private contributions to the resistance," as reported at the Complex website.
Jay-Z (real name Shaun Corey Carter) and wife Beyonce are President Obama's closest allies in pop culture. Together they are worth over an estimated billion dollars. According to hampton, who collaborated with Jay-Z on his book Decoded, the rapper privately donated "tens of thousands" of dollars to help post bail for "protesters" arrested in the recent Baltimore rioting in the wake of the death of Freddie Gray in police custody. hampton also asserts that the couple privately "wrote a huge check" for the Black Lives Matter movement.
