Notorious ambulance chaser Gloria Allred has a new client that swears her local Walmart is discriminating against her by locking up the African-American hair care products behind glass while hair care products for other races are out in the open.

The Perris, California woman, Essie Grundy, described the products as “segregated” in a news conference with Allred by her side:

"It was something I had to stand up for. I would like the glass to go down, and for things to go back to the way it was, where it's not segregated and everything is where everyone can get what they need."

Grundy also said a Walmart employee had to unlock the case to retrieve her products and walk her to a cash register for purchase before she was allowed to touch it. The mom of five said that made her feel like a “criminal.” The items behind the glass include combs which are just 49 cents, Grundy said, while more expensive items for other races aren’t locked up. 

Walmart responded to the lawsuit:

We serve more than 140 million customers weekly, crossing all demographics, and are focused on meeting their needs while providing the best shopping experience at each store.

We’re sensitive to this situation and also understand, like other retailers, that some products such as electronics, automotive, cosmetics and other personal care products are subject to additional security. Those determinations are made on a store-by-store basis using data supporting the need for the heightened measures. While we’ve yet to review a complaint, we take this situation seriously and look forward to addressing it with the court.

Walmart also locks up video games behind glass and an employee walks those items to a cash register for customers to pay first, as well. Tobacco products are typically kept behind cashiers because those are high-theft items. And that's not mentioning the hundreds of products with theft sensors throughout the store. The Perris Walmart no doubt put the black hair products in the case because of a history of increased likelihood of theft, not racism. But Allred’s making a big stink anyway. However, in a rather suspicious twist, the lawsuit is only seeking $4,000. Allred must have something else up her sleeve.
