Georgetown University has invited Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson to speak to graduates of the School of Foreign Service. But because he enforces immigration laws and sometimes has to deport illegal aliens, some students and alumnus are complaining that his presence on campus will be threatening to illegal immigrants. They are asking GU to rescind the invitation.
One letter stated,
Immigrant students and their families demand and deserve to feel safe and respected during their Commencement ceremony. It is unacceptable to force any graduating students to receive their diploma from an individual who has the power to destroy their families. As alumni, we urge you to rescind Secretary Johnson’s Commencement invitation and take meaningful action to ensure immigrant students and their families feel safe and welcome.
Another stated,
Graduation is supposed to be a safe, welcoming environment for students and families who have worked so hard to graduate, not a hostile or uncomfortable one… Johnson’s invitation is an insult to my family, to the myriad of Georgetown alumni from mixed-documented families and to the undocumented students who are preparing to graduate this month.
A graduating senior is not looking forward to walking across the platform to greet Johnson:
“I have to shake hands with the person who has the power to deport me and my family."
Though the Obama administration is responsible for deporting more people than did George W. Bush, Sec. Johnson isn't a hardliner on the issue, as Heat Street notes. He has expressed a need to tighten border security but has stated that "building more walls is not the answer."
College kids now need a safe space in which to commit their crimes.
