In the wake of Tuesday's announcement of the 2018 Oscar nominations, a former Reagan administration official is pushing the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to posthumously award the actor an honorary Oscar.
Fox News reports that Mark Weinberg, President Ronald Reagan's former press secretary and author of the upcoming book Movie Nights with the Reagans, is circulating a petition to the Academy to honor the only one of its members in history to reach the White House.
Weinberg said on today's "The Story" segment with Martha MacCallum that Reagan, who twice was President of the Screen Actors Guild, privately expressed to him his "hurt" about never being honored with recognition in the entertainment field he loved so much.
"It hurt him that they snubbed him," Weinberg said.
Weinberg noted that many honorary or lifetime achievement Oscars have been given out, but none to the iconic conservative President. Hollywood always preaches diversity, Weinberg pointed out, so "How about some diversity in political philosophy?" he asked.
Yeah, good luck with that.
