Fmr Obama Campaign Spokesperson: Mary Landrieu's Race-Baiting Was The Truth

"I also think she was speaking the truth."

"I also think she was speaking the truth." That's what Democratic Party operative Stephanie Cutter said about Senator Mary Landrieu's (D-LA) gaffe made a day earlier when Landrieu told NBC's Chuch Todd, in so many words, that Louisiana voters are racists and misogynists.

Ms. Cutter made the comments during a discussion with Republican Kevin Madden and CNN's Wolf Blitzer Friday. The former spokesperson for President Obama's reelection campaign believed that although Landrieu said it at a bad time, only four days before the election, she was speaking the truth. The Republican Madden strongly disagreed, saying the gaffe was going to hurt her campaign.

Blitzer: The Republican Governor Bobby Jindal of Louisiana said her remarks were remarkably divisive. What do you think of her remarks?

Cutter: Well the clip you didn’t show before that is her talking about the reason the president was unpopular in Louisiana and it was based on policy, when he shut down offshore drilling. And that was the bulk of her remarks.

Blitzer: But then she brought the issue of race in.

Cutter: You know, I think it probably was an impolitic thing to bring up, right now four days before the election, given the coalition that she needs to build for victory. But I also think she was speaking the truth. African-Americans have had it harder in the South, that’s the American history.

Madden: This is crunch time in these campaigns and it's a terrible thing to say because it doesn't even go to the ideological or party identification argument. She made a remark about people in Louisiana, saying that people in Louisiana were potentially viewing the president's performance through an ethnic lens, and  I think that is a mistake and she’s gonna pay a price for it.
