FLASHBACK: Liberal Celebrities Read Declaration of Independence

At least Mel Gibson was there.

Back in 2003, a video was released featuring a group of A-list celebrities standing inside Independence Hall and readingthe entire Declaration of Independence in the very room in which it was written. According to IMDB, the video was produced by Norman Lear and Rob Reiner.

The list of celebrities was a veritable who’s who in Hollywood at the time: Kathy Bates, Benicio Del Toro, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman, Mel Gibson, Whoopi Goldberg, Graham Greene, Ming-Na Wen, Edward Norton, Winona Ryder, Kevin Spacey, and Renée Zellweger.

An online search about the video revealed a Getty Images photo of the same group reading it live in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art on July 4, 2001. Two months later, America would come under its worst terrorist attack. That’s interesting to note because, in the aftermath of 9/11, America was unified in tragedy. Patriotism swelled and it would seem that somehow played into the idea for this production two years later.

What is also worthy of note is the fact that we now have video evidence that the liberal celebrities in the video have actually read the document. Without that, it would be safe to assume they hadn't, by how they never miss a chance to criticize the Founding Fathers and this great country.

But in the end, this video is well done and reading, or hearing, the Declaration of Independence shouldn’t be relegated to one day of the year. Listen to its promises and be thankful for our freedoms that we must continue to fight for at all costs.
