White House press secretary Sean Spicer is on an apology tour as of late for claiming Adolf Hitler didn’t use chemical weapons during World War II. He took tremendous heat from both sides for ignoring the slaughter of millions of Jews in gas chambers, although Spicer tried to clarify otherwise:
"[Hitler] was not using the gas on his own people the same way that Assad is doing," Spicer told reporters. "He brought them into the Holocaust centers, I understand that. But [not] in the way that Bashar al-Assad used them where he went into towns, dropped them down, into the middle of towns."
Nonetheless, the leftist media excoriated him for the gaffe, even going so far as to suggest he is a Holocaust denier.
And predictably, the left is once again being hypocritical. Spicer isn’t the only prominent figure to ever make such a claim. The popular and influential liberal talking head Chris Matthews said the exact same thing on MSNBC back in 2013:
“The problem is, I don’t like it, first of all I’m rather dovish, I don’t like what I’m going to say but it’s true. If you basically put down a red line and say don’t use chemical weapons, and it’s been enforced in the Western community, around the world — international community for decades. Don’t use chemical weapons. We didn’t use them in World War II, Hitler didn’t use them, we don’t use chemical weapons, that’s no deal.”
No outrage, no accusations of Holocaust denial ensued. But somehow when the right makes the same claim, they're Nazi apologists.
