Father-daughter dances are the latest victim of the social justice wars, but even social justice warriors aren't in agreement on exactly why.
A Staten Island school has canceled its annual dance because of concerns that it would be considered "gender-based programming," which is not allowed in New York City. The event will still go forward, but will be open to all children and their caregivers, not just fathers and daughters. According Pew research, fewer than half of people under the age of 18 live with married heterosexual parents. Isn't that all the more reason to celebrate dads, not less? Even this dance was traditionally open to fathers and "best guys," so those men who step into the gap but are not biological dads are still welcome.
Parents have pretty much had enough:
“All this gender crap needs to just stop,” said mom Akaia Cameron.
“They’re trying to take away everything that everybody grew up on and has come to know and I don’t think it’s fair or right,” said Matthew West, a 32-year-old father of two daughters at the school. He added, "I hate it . . . People are just becoming too scared to talk.”
Dad Jose Garcia, who attended the last two dances with his daughter, said, “It’s not fair at all.”
As for the "gender crap," the SJWs aren't even in agreement. Jared Fox, the DOE’s LGBT community liaison, said:
“Father-daughter dances inherently leave people out. Not just because of transgender status, just life in general. These can be really uncomfortable and triggering events.” However, he also said that these events can be good for trans students. “For a young trans girl, to be able to go to a father-daughter dance can feel very affirming because in this instance she’s recognized as a daughter.”
This is not one-sided, as the schools traditionally also hold mother/son events. If the SJWs want us to get mad about it, they should at least decide what they're mad about first.
