Diversity Training Course: Expecting Punctuality is Racist, Adjust to Their Schedule

“Your cultural perspective regarding time is neither more nor less valid than any other.”

It’s reached peak ridiculousness out there, folks.

Clemson University professors have gone through a diversity training course that teaches them not to expect minority students to be on time and to be sensitive to how other cultures perceive time. 

Organized in slides, the scenario in question features a fictional “Alejandro” who sets up a meeting between two groups of foreign professors and students. The first group is 15 minutes early to the meeting and the second is 10 minutes late. After the scene plays, The Daily Caller notes, a Q&A begins which “instructs Clemson’s professors that Alejandro would be insufficiently ‘inclusive’ if he were to ‘politely ask the second group to apologize.’ Alejandro would also be wrong to advise the straggling, late people who aren’t respecting everyone else’s time that ‘in our country, 9:00 a.m. means 9:00 a.m.’”

The professors are then told to “recognize cultural differences that may impact the meeting and adjust accordingly” because one “cultural perspective regarding time is neither more nor less valid than any other.”

What a deal at only $27,000 for the training materials!

Other slides, according to The DC, include training on how employing political correctness can actually “lead to better decisions” and “decrease employee turnover.” And if someone objects to being PC, Clemson professors are told to call those students out.

A third slide warns Clemson’s faculty that “freedom of speech and academic freedom are not limitless.” Then there is odd Orwellian threat: “Language that is derogatory with regard to race, sex, or other protected or emerging forms of diversity does not belong in a university that values inclusion.”

Campus Reform received the slides from an anonymous Clemson professor. Although the training course isn’t required, “it is strongly suggested” and participants must check a box at the end of the course saying they “acknowledge and certify that I have read, understood, and will comply with Clemson’s Anti-Harassment and Non-Discrimination Policy.”

This isn’t the most ridiculous thing that’s happened at Clemson. In 2015, the publicly funded South Carolina school apologized for cafeteria servers wearing sombreros and serving Mexican food for “Maximum Mexican” night. Offended students said, “Our culture isn’t a costume and we will not be mocked!”

The new push for diversity and inclusion came straight from its president, James Clements, who announced last year that “all employees will participate in diversity education and training.” 

That’s good news for Lee Gill, the school’s chief diversity officer and the one responsible for the training outlined above, who will continue to bring home $185,850 in salary every year.
