Dem Joe Manchin Agrees With Trump: ‘We Do Need A Wall

“We have to have border security."

Ring the bells -- a congressional Democrat has voiced agreement with Donald Trump.

On CNN's New Day Wednesday, Senator Joe Manchin surely sent Democratic heads shaking when he said beefed-up border security is greatly needed as the U.S. addresses the problem of illegal immigration. Furthermore, Manchin noted that President Trump is sympathetic toward those affected by the pending fate of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival program.

Most surprising of all, however, was Manchin's statement regarding the Left-reviled plan to build a wall along parts of America's southern border:

“We have to have border security. We know that. So if the president calls it a border wall, we do need a wall. We need to repair some wall. We need build some new wall. We need other technologies too.”

Wow.

New Day host Chris Cuomo pointed out the unlikelihood of Democrats going silently along with any type of plan by Trump regarding a barrier between the U.S. and Mexico:

“It’s messaging because you Democrats are going to have to swallow him rubbing your face in it and saying ‘I got the wall you lost.’ It matters politically.”

Manchin defied political convention, acknowledging that partisanship is less important than (say what?) actually getting things done:

“We need to get past this. The rhetoric is what it is. The President is going to say what he’s going to say. That doesn’t upset me as long as we have a final product and a pathway forward … We have a hard deadline. March 5th these kids start moving out technically if we don’t do something. February 8th the government shuts down again if we don’t have a deal. There’s no time to waste here.”

On Trump's attitude toward so-called Dreamers, Manchin was surprisingly complimentary of the President's disposition:

“I met with [President Trump] two days ago, sat in his office. Myself and Doug Jones sat with the President. I can tell you he believes these children need a pathway forward. There might be people around him that aren’t quite as sympathetic as he is. My gut tells me the President wants to get this done. I’m willing to continue to keep working with him in a bipartisan way, be an honest broker, tell him what I think will work and won’t work.”

Well -- according to Democrat Manchin, perhaps the President isn't Satan after all.

Politics is a slow moving machine; and if it is up to congressional Democrats, so long as Trump is in office, there will be no movement at all. The party of Kennedy and Roosevelt would do well to find more members who think like Manchin, and who believe in the borders -- and, therefore, the sovereignty -- of America. As does President Trump.
