On Sunday night, the Academy Awards gave the Best Foreign Film Oscar to Iranian director Asghar Farhadi's The Salesman. Farhadi boycotted the event to defy the Trump administration's controversial travel ban. All six of the directors nominated for their foreign language films were united in their disgust for Trump, and even put out an advanced statement condemning the “fanaticism” in our nation. Regardless of who won the Oscar, they collectively decided to dedicate the award to “unity and understanding.”
Farhadi's statement was read onstage in his absence:
“I’m sorry I’m not with you tonight. My absence is out of respect for the people of my country and those of other six nations who have been disrespected by the inhumane law that bans entry of immigrants to the U.S. Dividing the world into the ‘us’ and ‘our enemies’ categories creates fear."
Okay so an artistic Iranian made a political statement. Who cares? But when the Iranian Foreign Minister tweeted this, it was a bit much:
“Proud of cast & crew of "The Salesman" for Oscar & stance against #MuslimBan. Iranians have represented culture & civilization for millennia.”
The fact of the matter is this: Iran is not our friend. Their nuclear infrastructure is ever-growing, their Revolutionary Guards threaten the American armada in international waters, and their leaders insult our nation every chance they get. Even some members of the media too umbrage at Javad Zarif’s casual omission of some salient facts.
CNN’s Jake Tapper responded in six tweets:
Well played, Jake. You know when CNN reporters accuse you of obscuring the truth, you need to really re-evaluate yourself. Hopefully, Tapper's tweets caused at least some of those Hollywood liberals to do just that.
