Today we celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., and how is CNN celebrating? By promoting socialism. The CNN website features a piece "Three Ways MLK Speaks to Our Time," and one of the three is "he was a socialist before it was cool."
"There was a time in American politics when calling someone a socialist was a slur," the piece begins. "Not anymore, at least for many younger Americans who are developing a distrust of capitalism":
One of the most popular politicians in recent times is Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, a self-described Democratic Socialist who almost captured the Democratic nomination for president. A 2016 Harvard University poll said 51% of young Americans -- 18- to-29-year-olds -- oppose capitalism. And a poll conducted the next year by YouGov and the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation found that most American millennials preferred to live in a socialist country than a capitalist one.
Interesting to see that CNN is openly promoting socialism, but there's really nothing "cool" about these oppressive systems that leave people dead. Perhaps the writer, John Blake, thinks that socialism is so cool because he doesn't even know what socialism is. The Free Beacon pointed out this gem:
I'm not sure a lot of people would link what's happening to Venezuela to socialism; in fact everything I've read and talking to people from there attributes there collapse to other problems. https://t.co/BfgiKWBoYz— John K. Blake (@JohnBlakeCNN) January 15, 2018
Even aside from the glaring grammatical error, this is ridiculous. Certainly one of the key elements of an oppressive regime, such as the socialist one in Venezuela, is that they are not getting accurate information. The propaganda is high. It would make sense that they don't attribute their problems to the actual cause. In reality, Venezuela was a rich country that was driven into the ground by socialism. The people are starving to the extent that they are breaking into zoos and eating the animals. Sure, there is healthcare for everyone, but there is no medicine, and they won't allow humanitarian aid. As for school, neither teachers nor students are bothering to show up.
And that's just in Venezuela. Check out Brazil.
Socialism destroys economies and countries, and leaves misery and death in its wake. The fact that some Americans think it's cool is an egregious failure in education. Let's not celebrate that, CNN.
