On Morning Joe Monday, MSNBC’s Chuck Todd addressed the recent CNN Poll showing that Mitt Romney would defeat Barack Obama if the election were held today, saying “this is a country that is fatigued from this president,” and that with “more foreign policy problems that pop up,” the American people’s confidence in the president falls further.
A CNN/ORC International poll released Sunday revealed that if the 2012 election were held today, Romney would defeat Obama by 5 points more than Obama defeated him:
According to the poll, if the 2012 election were somehow held again, Romney would capture 53% of the popular vote, with the President at 44%. Obama beat Romney 51%-47% in the popular vote in the 2012 contest. And he won the all-important Electoral College by a wider margin, 332 electoral votes to Romney's 206.
Morning Joe co-host Thomas Roberts said the poll clearly revealed “voter’s remorse” for reelecting Obama in 2012. Todd agreed, saying the poll showed that Americans were “fatigued” by the president and lacked confidence in him, but that didn’t necessarily translate to wins for Republicans:
Todd: Do you know his average job rating in the [states with] competitive Senate races is 38%? This is a country that is fatigued from this president... The more foreign policy problems that pop up, you see in the poll numbers a lack of confidence in him, so to me those polls are more reflective of Obama the person and the president. It says nothing about the state of, for instance, either party.
Todd has had strong readings of presidential approval polls recently, stating in June that, according to an NBC/WSJ poll, the American people were telling Obama, "Your presidency is over."
This weekend's CNN/ORC poll also showed that while Romney’s stock has risen in comparison to Obama, likely voters would elect Hillary Clinton over Romney by double digits in 2016.
