Chris Cuomo suggested on CNN’s New Day that perhaps Obamacare has a bad rap because it hasn’t been fully defended by Democrats. That’s strange, because his own network has spent years singing its praises. Maybe Cuomo doesn’t watch CNN. Most of us don’t.
House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) was a guest on the Tuesday broadcast and Cuomo wondered if the Democratic Party is seizing the political moment when the GOP is struggling to get its health care bill through.
"You have trouble within the GOP. Trouble between the president and his own party. That could be an opportunity, though, for the Democrats,” Cuomo said. “The question is, are they seizing that opportunity?"
Hoyer could only laugh when Cuomo said, “Could there be criticism you haven't defended it enough? I mean, the narrative from the Republicans is universally that Obamacare is dying on the vine. It's in a death spiral. The president calls it a nightmare. I don't hear full-throated defense from Democrats on this show on a regular basis fighting those propositions.”
What on Earth is Cuomo talking about? He’s done it himself on his own program. Once, when Sen. Ted Cruz was criticizing Obamacare, Cuomo was on the attack: “How can we say it's not working when it isn’t implemented yet? How can you say premiums are skyrocketing when they haven't put the plans into effect yet? You’re being a little dangerous with how much political spin you’re putting on something that’s so central to the well-being of so many families?”
More recently, Cuomo was in full defense mode with The Federalist senior writer Mary Katherine Ham, falsely claiming the GOP was coming after pre-existing conditions and gutting essential services by replacing Obamacare.
But CNN often practices cutting the feed when a guest goes off script as it did this year when a woman was complaining to President Trump about the exorbitant costs she’s incurred under Obamacare. Right about the time her story was hitting hard, the “TV gremlins” at CNN chewed right through the wires and abruptly cut the segment short.
The only thing not being defended on Cuomo’s program, or any other on CNN, is anything the Republicans put forward.
