Broadway Event to Raise Money for LGBT Teens in New York

Also reproductive rights for teens and stopping military recruiting in public schools

On July 21, various Broadway stars will converge at the Skirball Center in New York for the 12th annual "Broadway Stands Up for Freedom" event that benefits the New York Civil Liberties Union and its work with the LGBT youth of the city.

The evening will also include the teenage winners of the NYCLU's Freedom of Expression contest. Tickets start at $60.

NYCLU Executive Director Donna Lieberman told BroadwayWorld.com:

We are elated at the range and breadth of talent that will appear onstage at the Skirball to celebrate the vital ties that bind the arts and civil liberties. This one-time-only concert promises inspiration along with great music and laughs, all to support the NYCLU's youth programs.

The NYCLU advocates for LGBT rights for teens, racial justice, reproductive rights and the Teen Health Initiative for educating teenagers on their health care rights. They also have campaigns in place to "protect students from overly aggressive school policing and military recruitment practices," as stated at their website.

Their site is currently hosting a petition to "Say NO to religion and discrimination in pre-kindergarten." The aim is to stop "using New York tax dollars to proselytize to four-year-olds" through the use of "religious texts." The NYCLU says New York Mayor Bill de Blasio's new guidelines for religious schools tramples the separation of church and state and "creates an environment where New York City children and their parents may feel unwelcome due to their faith, gender or LGBT status."

A main goal of these and other NYCLU programs is to "transform youth into activists and advocates for their own rights and liberties."
