In a stunning move that is sure to open up a wave of criticism and controversy, as well as cheers from a conservative and Republican base fed up with the media, Republican presumptive nominee Donald Trump announced on his Facebook page in the last hour that he is hereby revoking the press credentials for the Washington Post.

This move has clear implications that will be interpreted by both sides according to their understanding of Donald Trump. It will absolutely be characterized as an attack on freedom of the press by the left and other MSM outlets. Trump is indicating that unfavorable coverage will be met with retribution or lack of access. But among supporters and a large swath of the American people who have an incredibly low (6% favorable) opinion of the media, it will be characterized as an overdue comeuppance. Indeed, the Washington Post in particular has long been highlighted by conservatives as a particularly egregious spin site for liberal ideas and conservative bashing.
Earlier today on Twitter, Trump was displeased with CNN and pleased with Fox News regarding their coverage, and just over a week ago, Trump revoked Buzzfeed's press credentials after the website banned all advertising by his campaign, which is, it should be noted, a decidedly different situation from the Washington Post, that seems to be guilty of simply unfavorable coverage.
The fallout from Trump's abrupt announcement will surely (and ironically) dominate the election news cycle for the immediate future.
