On The Daily Show Monday, Bill Maher mocked Hillary Clinton’s and Barack Obama’s politically motivated religious claims, ripping Hillary for saying the Bible was her favorite book and arguing that President Obama was obviously a “drop-dead atheist,” saying, “Obama’s always spouting spiritual bullshit and I don’t believe it for a second.”
In a discussion that touched on several topics, including the left’s least favorite former vice president, Maher focused, unsurprisingly, on “bad” religion, especially its insincere political uses. Maher began by saying he believed “the needle has moved” in America on religion, but admitted that the country was still largely religious. He then turned his sights on Hillary and Obama, blasting both for pandering to the religious majority.
Maher: People used to ask me would you ever run for office, which is such a silly question, I could never. And if I did, my slogan would be, “Drugs are good and religion is bad.” Which you can’t probably run for in this country, but I feel like, you know, the needle has moved on both those. I think people have come over to my way of thinking...
Stewart: ...I still feel like, for a Western country, this is probably the most religious....
Maher: Oh of course. We’re, as often the case in social issues, a step behind other countries—and certainly about that. I mean Hillary Clinton just said her favorite book was the Bible.
Stewart: I thought that was so funny...
Maher: You couldn’t find something more violent, like Game of Thrones. [Stewart and crowd laughs.] That’s so a beat behind. That’s certainly not where the millenials are...
Stewart: Don’t you think that was merely an indication that she is running for president. I don’t think in reality that is her favorite book.
Maher: Oh, of course not. Well, actually, I don’t know about that...
Then Maher turned the discussion to "drop-dead atheist" Obama and his politically calculated choice of church:
Maher: You know who is a liar about this is Obama. Obama’s always spouting spiritual bullshit and I don’t believe it for a second. He’s a drop-dead atheist, absolutely.
Stewart: No!... How many years did he spend in Reverend Wright’s church...?
Maher: He never went. He joined because it was politically necessary... .He joined because he wanted to move ahead in the political world...
Stewart followed up by saying the one thing you can’t be running for office in this country is an atheist. Maher agreed, calling it "so wrong" and saying atheism “is the single biggest minority in the country.”
