An Atlanta-based rapper was shot early Tuesday morning inside a Waffle House and is now recovering in the hospital, marking the 11th time Yung Mazi has survived a gunshot wound.
Police say the rapper was waiting for his order at around 4 a.m. when he was shot in the chest. The suspect or suspects are still at large, and no description has been made available.
In at least one of the other ten shooting incidents, Mazi was struck in the head. He named a recent demo of his music “Physical Therapy” as a nod to one of his injuries that resulted in him being sequestered to a wheelchair during recovery.
After the latest shooting on Tuesday, the rapper bragged about his near-super-human ability on Twitter in a now-deleted post: “God made me bulletproof.”
In the video above, Mazi was asked to explain why he keeps getting shot. “I might walk around with a quarter-million-dollars-worth of jewelry on,” he said. He also blames his skin tone and because “some people don’t like real dudes.”
According to CBS News, Mazi is a father and was raised a devout Muslim. His biography states:
He was shot five times—one bullet hitting him in the head and leaving him temporarily brain damaged, almost ending his life. "When the bullet hit me in the head," Mazi recollects, "it greatly affected me. I had to learn how to read, write, and speak all over again. I’m still not 100% right. I tried doing my daughter’s elementary school homework and it was hard. I couldn’t count money. My brother had to send text messages for me from my phone. It was deep.”
Mazi’s shooting adds to the toll for his city over the holiday weekend. On Christmas Eve in Atlanta, a man was found shot to death, execution-style, inside his car. The suspect was captured on surveillance camera leaving the scene but hasn’t been found. Another man was killed inside of his apartment. There were no signs of struggle and police say the suspect is also still on the run.
Meanwhile in Chicago over the Christmas weekend, there were 27 shootings, leaving 12 people dead. Police blame gang violence.
