Armed Resource Officer Waited Outside School for 6 Minutes During Shooting

“Devastated. Sick to my stomach. There are no words.”

It has come to light that the armed resource officer stationed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School waited outside the school for up to six minutes instead of going in while an 18-year-old gunman killed 17.

Politico journalist Marc Caputo posted this devastating news on Twitter, explaining that the deputy, Scott Peterson, was alerted to the freshman building where he could hear gunfire, but never went inside to confront the shooter.

Florida Sheriff Scott Israel said in a press conference that Peterson arrived at the scene 90 seconds after the attack but remained outside the building during the entire incident and even after it was over. Israel said video evidence shows Peterson doing absolutely nothing for at least four minutes during the six-minute massacre.

When asked what his officer should’ve done, Israel responded, “Went in, addressed the killer, killed the killer.”

“Devastated. Sick to my stomach. There are no words,” the sheriff added. “These families lost their children. We lost coaches. I’ve been to the funerals. I’ve been to the homes where they sit in shiva. I’ve been to the vigils.”

Caputo also reported that Peterson “quit immediately today upon learning he was being suspended without pay, pending [internal affairs] investigation and likely termination.”

This is yet another failure in a long line of law enforcement errors that led to this shooting. The FBI and local police were alerted to the shooter, Nikolas Cruz, on numerous occasions. Local police were called to Cruz’s resident at least 39 times and the FBI was alerted that he wanted to be a “professional school shooter,” but never acted on the tip. The FBI also received an anonymous tip just a few weeks before the shooting that Cruz was a danger to others. Yet, they ignored that as well. Now, we have Peterson, who was armed and in uniform and decided to cower outside instead of engaging the suspect.

This is horrifying news on many levels. Expect gun control advocates to use this as proof that armed security guards at schools don’t stop shootings as is being proposed by President Trump. This will bolster their agenda to continue seeking a complete gun grab from law-abiding citizens.
